Service League of Greenville 2021 Scholarships   

 Service League of Greenville is proud to announce the four 2021 Scholarship recipients.  Over the past couple of years, this organization has awarded a $2000 scholarship to Pitt County residents in the ECU Brody School of Medicine, the ECU School of Dental Medicine, the ECU School of Nursing, and the ECU Allied Health Sciences. The respective recipients this year are Olivia Rickenbach, Philip Perdue, Chelsea Ochoa and Anna Tyson. Martha Bloss, Scholarship Chairman, presented a check for the Scholarship Endowment Fund to Dr. Herb Garrison, Interim President ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation, at our May Luncheon.

As a medical student at Brody, Olivia Rickenbach grew up in Greenville and always dreamed of working and serving as a local physician. She volunteers at the Greenville Community Shelter Clinic, and is a board member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Association of Women Surgeons. Olivia is interested in ENT, Surgery and Pediatrics.  

Philip Perdue also grew up in Greenville and is excited to be a student at the ECU School of Dental Medicine. He has volunteered with the Smile Safari Mobile Dental Clinic providing children with free dental care throughout Pitt County. Philip is excited to serve our community in the future.

Anna Tyson is a student in the ECU School of Allied Health pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy. Anna wants to positively influence the lives of children and adults in our area. She loves to volunteer with various organizations who support her goals.

Chelsea Ochoa is continuing her education by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She is currently a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics at Vidant, has a young son, and is supporting her husband as he also earns his degree in Nursing. Chelsea plans to continue her education in grad school and obtain a job in education She would like to use her bedside nursing experience to train future nurses.

The endowed scholarship fund was established in 2018 by the Service League of Greenville to provide scholarship support to second year students enrolled in the Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, and the College of Nursing within the ECU Division of Heath Sciences.  The requirements for consideration for the annual scholarship are that the student must be a resident of one of 29 counties in Eastern North Carolina served by Vidant, which includes Pitt County.  In addition to having a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the recipients must demonstrate a commitment to community service and have a financial need.
