The Service League of Greenville is proud to have made a one-time donation of $100,000 to the ECU Health Foundation to become one of only a few Founding Members in their “Investing in our Future” campaign. Special plaques will be displayed in the ECU Medical Center, ECU SOM, ECU SODM, ECU School of Nursing, and the ECU School of Allied Health.

ECU Health is committed to eastern North Carolina through the creation of the “Investing in Our Future” endowment. The $20 million endowment demonstrates their dedication towards alignment as a clinically integrated academic healthcare organization. The vision is to create a perpetual opportunity to advance ECU Health and the schools and colleges of the health sciences at East Carolina University to improve the health, education, and well-being of eastern North Carolina and beyond. These funds will provide critical support for student scholarships, clinician/scientist research support, and recruitment of medical leaders. The proceeds from the endowed investment will help transform our communities for generations to come.

Service League of Greenville 2021 Scholarships

 Service League of Greenville is proud to announce the four 2021 Scholarship recipients.  Over the past couple of years, this organization has awarded a $2000 scholarship to Pitt County residents in the ECU Brody School of Medicine, the ECU School of Dental Medicine, the ECU School of Nursing, and the ECU Allied Health Sciences. The respective recipients this year are Olivia Rickenbach, Philip Perdue, Chelsea Ochoa and Anna Tyson. Martha Bloss, Scholarship Chairman, presented a check for the Scholarship Endowment Fund to Dr. Herb Garrison, Interim President ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation, at our May Luncheon.

As a medical student at Brody, Olivia Rickenbach grew up in Greenville and always dreamed of working and serving as a local physician. She volunteers at the Greenville Community Shelter Clinic, and is a board member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Association of Women Surgeons. Olivia is interested in ENT, Surgery and Pediatrics.  

Philip Perdue also grew up in Greenville and is excited to be a student at the ECU School of Dental Medicine. He has volunteered with the Smile Safari Mobile Dental Clinic providing children with free dental care throughout Pitt County. Philip is excited to serve our community in the future.

Anna Tyson is a student in the ECU School of Allied Health pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy. Anna wants to positively influence the lives of children and adults in our area. She loves to volunteer with various organizations who support her goals.

Chelsea Ochoa is continuing her education by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She is currently a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics at Vidant, has a young son, and is supporting her husband as he also earns his degree in Nursing. Chelsea plans to continue her education in grad school and obtain a job in education She would like to use her bedside nursing experience to train future nurses.

The endowed scholarship fund was established in 2018 by the Service League of Greenville to provide scholarship support to second year students enrolled in the Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, College of Allied Health Sciences, and the College of Nursing within the ECU Division of Heath Sciences.  The requirements for consideration for the annual scholarship are that the student must be a resident of one of 29 counties in Eastern North Carolina served by Vidant, which includes Pitt County.  In addition to having a GPA of 3.0 or higher, the recipients must demonstrate a commitment to community service and have a financial need.

Service League of Greenville Easter Drive Through

On March 22nd, the March winds were no match for the Service League of Greenville as we held our first Easter Drive Through. We set up in the Memorial Baptist Church parking lot with our ladies in our smocks and even some in Easter Bunny costumes!

As more than 75 ladies drove through the parking lot, they dropped off toys selected from the Wish Lists for the Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House, and made donations for the Easter Meal at the Ronald McDonald House. Many dropped off blankets they had made for patients at Vidant, snacks for the Hospice House, and items for the Layette packages. The Baskets were overflowing with donations, and the Easter bunnies had given out goodie bags to all our members. We were all excited about our fun time together. Even with our social distancing, wearing of masks, and windy weather, the Service League of Greenville showed that we are excited to help in many ways even during tough times!!

The carloads of gifts were going to be delivered to the Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House this week. Thank you to all the wonderful ladies in the Service League of Greenville for your amazing generosity.

Christmas Drive Through

On the cold and rainy morning of December 7th, the Service League of Greenville held its first ever Christmas Drive Through for our members. We set up in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot with a red truck with a Christmas tree in the back, a trailer with a Christmas tree and a fireplace, and tents to cover us while we served hot chocolate and goodie bags. The fireplace had a beautiful wreath given to the Service League by the Vidant Medical Foundation. Our President and Board members all dressed up as elves or in our Ugly Christmas sweaters. We were joined by Santa, along with beautiful Christmas music played by Clay Steinwinter.  We want to thank WITN-TV for coming and sharing our day on the local news.

As more than 100 ladies drove through the parking lot, they had pictures taken with Santa, dropped off toys for the Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House, and made donations to be shared with 3 Food Pantries in Pitt County. Many showed off their ugly Christmas sweaters, others dropped off blankets they had made for patients at Vidant, and others turned in their guesses as to how many Hershey kisses were in the big vase. 

After 2 hours, the rain stopped and we had filled up the trailer with toys for the children! The Baskets were overflowing with donations, and the table was full of finished blankets. Our Santa was tired from running back and forth for pictures, we had given out all the goodie bags and hot chocolate. We were all excited about our fun time together. Even with our social distancing, wearing of masks, and cold weather, the Service League of Greenville showed that we are excited to help in many ways even during tough times!!

After everyone rested, the winners of the contests were chosen. The Vase held 587 Hershey kisses and Kathie Beckman guessed 562!! The winner of the best Sweater/costume was Jean Askew…the newest elf in the membership!! The carloads of gifts are going to be delivered to the Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. The donations to the three Food Pantries will be distributed this week. Thank you to all the wonderful ladies in the Service League of Greenville for your amazing generosity.

Topping Off Ceremony for Vidant Cancer Center

Service League members joined hospital employees, visitors and construction workers in signing the last beam to go on top of Vidant cancer center.

On January 26, 2016, Service League President Mary Lee Hobbie and First V.P. Annelle West attended the “topping off” ceremony and watched as the signed beam was lifted into place.  The cancer center is anticipated to be completed in March 2018.
