On Saturday February 18, 2017, THE SERVICE LEAGUE OF GREENVILLE Fifty-fourth Annual Charity Ball for the benefit of THE LAUGHINGHOUSE HOSPITAL FUND was held at Rock Springs.

The Laughinghouse Hospital Fund was established in 1939 and is dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Charles O’Hagan Laughinghouse. Today, through the recommendations of physicians and the assistance of social services, our fund  provides prescription medicine to those in the community who do not have medical insurance and are not receiving public assistance.

“DINING WITH THE LEAGUE” Funds A Fresh Look For Hope Lodge’s Patio

While we completed the sales of our “DINING WITH THE LEAGUE” cookbook and made generous donations to three charities last year, our cookbook fund continues to give back to the community of Greenville.

McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge was in desperate need of reupholstered patio cushions.  With the help of Mickey Parrott of Parrott Canvas who generously donated several bolts of Sunbrella fabric, we funded the reupholstering through Fabric & Drapery and gave Hope Lodge’s patio a fresh new look.

Here is what Katrina Combs at McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge had to say:

A sincere THANK YOU goes out to the ladies from the Service League of Greenville. They have brightened our outdoor seating areas with bright, cheerful, comfy cushions. We’re looking forward to enjoying the sunshine and fresh air in 2017 and for many years to come. Their continued love and support of this facility and the guests we serve is a treasure without measure.

A huge thanks to Mickey Parrott and all the Service League of Greenville members and those in the community who supported our cookbook effort over the years! As you can see, the well-worn floral cushions were in desperate need of replacement.

80 Families Reached With Our Annual Holiday Food Box Project

Thanks to the generosity of the Service League of Greenville members, our annual Holiday Food Box Project was a huge success.  Working closely with Mr Randy Stroud, the General Manager of Piggly Wiggly on Dickinson Avenue, we were able to purchase and donate 80 Holiday Food Boxes.  (Possibly, our best year yet!)  Mr. Stroud even added a can of cranberry sauce to each box at no cost.

Hope of Glories Ministries and the Salvation Army each delivered 40 boxes to in-need families in their community.  Cards were placed in the boxes with holiday wishes from the Service League of Greenville.

Each box contained:

  • 1 package of rolls
  • 2 cans of green beans
  • 1 bag of sugar
  • 1 can of apple filling
  • 1 package of cookies
  • 1 jar of peanut butter
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 2 packs of gravy mix
  • 1 box of mac and cheese
  • 1 can of sliced peaches
  • 1 box of crackers
  • 1 can of sweet potato
  • 1 box of rice
  • 1 canned ham
  • 1 bag of oranges or tangerines
  • 1 box of candy canes

Service League In The News: Hospice Volunteering & Provisional Members

During November’s National Home Care and Hospice month celebrations, Dr. Tae Lee, director of Vidant Home, Health, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Theresa Warren, Service League member and hospice volunteer, were interviewed on WITN about the importance of Home Care and Hospice and the wonderful rewards of volunteering with hospice — as many of our Service League volunteers know first hand!

Blankets of Fellowship, Caring, and Support

Our hand-tied fleece blankets keep building circles of fellowship, caring, and support —

Those circles build and strengthen through the making of the blankets:

Service League members came together
to create 23 hand-tied fleece blankets
at our November blanket work shop.

And through the giving and receiving of the blankets:

Doctors and staff at Vidant Health’s 3East
enthusiastically received the hand-made blankets
which they passed on to delighted patients

Sustaining Members Lead Service League Efforts In Support of Flood Victims

The Service League of Greenville’s sustaining membership have made the support of local Hurricane Matthew flood victims and Salvation Army a focus of their service work this year with a multi-effort approach.

Money:

In response to the flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew, sustaining members of the Service League of Greenville donated $500 from their treasury to the Salvation Army.  The funds were earmarked for Pitt County residents impacted by the flooding.

Coats:

After learning of additional needs of the flood victims, sustaining members hosted a membership wide “Coat Shower” to collect new and gently used coats during our general Service League meetings in November and December.  One hundred coats were donated from active and sustaining members!   Twenty children’s coats were delivered to South Greenville school and 80 adult coats were delivered to the Salvation Army!

Fund Raising:

Taking time from the holiday rush, Sustaining members organized a Service League bell ringing On Wednesday December 14 — ten sustaining and active members rang the bell for Salvation Army in front of Belks’ home store.  Pictured below are (left to right) Laurie Charlton, Linda Harrington, Linda Seykora, Angel Mackensie, and Kim Sayers.

Canned Goods:

Keeping the momentum going into the new year and to help the Salvation Army stock their food panty for the high demand winter months, sustaining Service League members organized a membership wide canned goods “shower” to be held at our general meeting in January.   Cash and non-perishable canned goods (especially meats) will be collected and delivered to the Salvation Army Food Pantry.

Welcoming Our Provisional Members With A Christmas Tea

Our Christmas Tea is one of the events most beloved by Service League of Greenville members.

We conduct our normal monthly meeting.

Then, we set a joyful holiday tone.  This year we enjoyed the heartwarming and uplifting sounds of R. Michael Stephenson on Sax and Steve Creech on guitar.

We give a warm welcome to our new provisional Service League members.  This year we have (left to right) Linda Brewer, Kay Gooding, Mary Nau and Kathy Baxter joining our ranks and embarking on their provisional year of service.

Making A Difference With 28 Blankets

During our October Blanket Workshop, Service League members had all the fun of making 28 hand tied fleece lap blankets for Vidant patients.  Little did they suspect the powerful impact the blankets would have when workshop co-chairs Cathy Marsh and Cassie Causey delivered them to Vidant’s Medical Intermediate Unit.

The impact of those 28 blankets can best told by two thank you notes to the Service League:

I sent the two of you a written thank you but just wanted to make sure that you saw the impact your visit to MICU made – not only on the patients – but also on the staff. Below you will find Maria Locklear (MIU Nurse Manager’s) message that she wanted me to share with the two of you and the team that came together to make those beautiful blankets. I think the MIU team came to the conclusion that the best word to describe what had taken place was compassion…

Please thank the service league team again for their kind donation of the handmade blankets for our patients.  This was a humbling experience for our team. The smiles, thanks and nonverbal responses were so touching. Patients who have been on our unit for a long time with traches smiled and showed emotions that just warmed our hearts. Everyone appreciated the gift and expressed how beautiful they were.  Again, Thanks to the Service League team for all their hard work and dedication to our organization.
