Fifteen Years Of Volunteer Service Honored

During the McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge annual reunion in April,  The Service League of Greenville, Inc. was honored with a group award for 15 years of volunteer service and support.  Hope Lodge manager, Katrina Combs, and Hope Lodge Regional Manager, Sundi Herring, presented the award to Becky Brittle, our Hope Lodge Chairwoman, on behalf of all our members.

The members of the Service League of Greenville, Inc. are dedicated volunteers who have served the McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge since we opened our doors in 2002. Members have generously given of their time and talents at the front desk each day of the week for the past 15 years. They bake tasty desserts for our annual reunions and look for ways to serve the cancer patients and caregivers of Hope Lodge on a daily basis. This year, they helped us spruce up our outdoor seating areas by sponsoring the making of beautiful teal colored cushions.

A Wonder Women Luncheon

Service League of Greenville President Annelle West gave thanks and praise to her WONDER WOMEN team for their hard work and many accomplishments during our annual board luncheon at the Hilton.  Special recognition was given to outgoing board members — Recording Secretary, Beth Harman; Corresponding Secretary, Blanche Sullivan; and Treasurer, Jo Ann Jones.  Thank you Ladies!

And we would like to thank you, Madam President, for your Wonder Woman leadership!

4 Workshops — 104 Blankets — Unlimited Love & Compassion

The Easter Bunny made blanket deliveries to Vidant Cancer patients on Easter morning — with a little help from Service League members.

In April, Hospital Activities Co-chairs Cassie Causey and Cathy Marsh made a final blanket delivery to Vidant Hospital.  30 hand-tied, fleece blankets were entrusted to Leslie Spencer’s capable hands.  She, in turn, organized their special delivery to enliven Easter Sunday for Vidant cancer patients.  (Santa’s elves could take some pointers from these ladies.)

Additional blankets will be gifted as other cancer patients finish with their infusion treatments.

All told, 104 blankets were made during 4 workshops by many nimble and willing Service League hands (supported, of course, by plenty of lively conversations) and gifted with love and compassion to patient throughout Vidant Health.

Huge thanks to all the Service League members and Vidant staff who helped make these blanket gifts so special.

And, of course, Cassie, Cathy and Leslie — You ladies are awesome!

Service In Support of Hospice House

Service League of Greenville members were among those honored during Vidant Home Health and Hospice’s annual volunteer appreciation luncheon on April 6th.   Our members share their volunteer time and talent at Hospice House through general patient and family interactions, administrative tasks, bereavement calls, home visits, home cooked meals, and assistance during special events.

To all who volunteer at Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice House, we join Vidant Home Health and Hospice in saying “thank you for your selflessness and dedication to serving hospice patients and families.”

Spring Meet & Greet

Spring is the time for welcoming new.  So what better time for the Service League of Greenville to reach out to other service minded women in our community by hosting our first ever Meet & Greet.  In a wonderfully attended, invitation only event at the Firefly Wine Shop, we shared great food and fellowship, awareness about the Service League, our commitment to our community, and the start of our biggest ever pledge — $2 million for a healing garden in the soon (2018) to be completed Cancer Center at Vidant Medical Center.

Our thanks to all our wonderful guests for making this delightful evening a memorable first.   It is our hope that this will be the start of something new for them too!

Reaching Out To Patients With Blankets Of Warmth and Cheer

Service League of Greenville members came together for a third blanket workshop on February 16th.  Twenty-Three hand-tied fleece blankets were made.

Hospital activities co-chairs  Cathy Marsh & Cassie Causey delivered the blankets to Vidant Hospital on February 27th.   Leslie Spencer, Office of Patient and Family Experience, and Erica Janak will share the blankets with patients in need of some special love and care.

Our thanks to the many Service League members who reach out to patients through the making of these blankets and Vidant staff for making sure they get to those in need of a little extra warmth and cheer!

Feeding the Need — Salvation Army Food Bank & RMH Wish List

We held our Canned Goods Shower in support of Salvation Army Food Bank and a Wish List Roundup for the Ronald McDonald House during our February general meeting and got an overwhelming response from our membership!

It took 6 people multiple trips to unload the van at the Salvation Army.  (The pictures below were taken before the van was fully loaded and do not do justice to the depth of items packed into that cargo well!  The seats and floor space of the van were filed as well!)

— With only a few days notice on some priority wish list needs (cooking oil, coffee creamer and cleaner) for the Ronald McDonald house, our membership more than met the challenge of filling the need!

Our thanks to all the Service League of Greenville members who generously brought items in for both events.  Special thanks go to Sustaining Co-chairs Laurie Charlton & Katie Beckman for organizing the Salvation Army canned goods shower and Ronald McDonald House chair Jamie Kirby for collecting and transporting wish list items!

With Giving Hearts … On Christmas Eve

Pixabay heart gift (pd - CC0)As a volunteer service organization, we take pride in our service hearts.  But when it comes to other needs in our community, we don’t sit back on our laurels.  We like to shine with the generosity of our giving hearts too.  Especially, when it comes to food!  Many members routinely provide food dishes as needed for guests or special events at Ronald McDonald house, Hope Lodge and Hospice House.

Some times the need is at a moments notice…

Just after noon on Christmas eve, an email request went out to our membership from our Hospice House Chair, Martha Bloss:

“Sorry for the short notice, but Hospice House on Wellness Drive has a need for dinner tomorrow.  I know everyone is busy and many of you are out of town.  15-20 family members will be there tomorrow and most restaurants will be closed.  I will take a chicken casserole.  If you can make an extra side dish, salad, bread, desert or tea please take it over before 5:00, 12/24/16.”

Almost immediately the email responses poured in:

“…Pineapple Au Gratin…” – Pat

“…Some sliced ham and a small casserole of sweet potatoes…” – Anne

“…Brownies out of the oven…” – Jeri

“…Broccoli casserole, rolls and congealed salad…” – Gail

“…Some ham and a plate of goodies..” – Blanche

“…A cake…” – Nancy

And within hours, the makings of a fine holiday meal were delivered to the Hospice House!
